History

The following list of people buried or commemorated in Westminster Abbey provides links to information about them and their monuments. The list is necessarily selective, but further names and information will gradually be added.  At this stage we have concentrated on the most famous names and those about whom we receive frequent enquiries.

Most pages about individual monuments include a transcript of the inscription and an English translation if the original is in Latin.  You should note that in some contexts Latin uses the letters I and V where we might expect J and U respectively, and that many names are given in their Latinized form.  For example, Iacobvs (or Jacobus) is the Latin for James. The spelling of names in English has often changed over the centuries and they do not always appear on monuments in their modern form.  This does not mean that a mistake was made in cutting the inscription!
