History

He was Treasurer of the Household to Elizabeth I. His brass in the north ambulatory has disappeared but four shields of arms remain, now mounted on a pillar nearby (the original matrices are filled with plain brass). These are palimpsests or re-used brasses. On the reverse of the shields it was found that they came from the memorial to Robert Elsmer who died in 1512. It was not an uncommon practice to appropriate someone else’s brass, especially after the dissolution of the monasteries.
