History

The brass over his grave in the nave was designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott. He is shown in contemporary dress with his arms folded and he seems to float in the air as there is nothing for his feet to rest on. He was the son of George Stephenson, the railway engineer, and Robert himself was best known for his high level bridge at Newcastle upon Tyne and the Victoria bridge over the St Lawrence river in Canada.
