Margaret (d.1276) and John de Valence (d.1277)
Unfortunately the earliest examples in the Abbey are hidden from general view in the chapel of St Edward the Confessor. Portions have survived only because Henry V built his chantry chapel at the eastern end and partly covered them. They were the young children of William de Valence, who has a fine effigy in St Edmund’s chapel. John’s brass has the remains of the stem of a cross set into Cosmatesque mosaic but only a few letters of the inscriptions now remain.
