John of Waltham (d.1395)

The remains of this figure can be found in St Edward’s chapel. He was Bishop of Salisbury, Master of the Rolls and Lord Treasurer of England. His was the first non-royal burial in the Confessor’s chapel, by order of Richard II who had great regard for him. He wears mass vestments and mitre and holds his pastoral staff. On the front of his chasuble are representations of the Madonna and Child. The brass originally had a triple canopy and figures of saints in niches around the bishop.
