Samuel Rathbone is the Organ Scholar of Westminster Abbey. He was previously Organ Scholar of St Marylebone Parish Church, where his duties involved accompanying the ten-voice professional choir and teaching piano at St Marylebone School for Girls.
Born in London in 1986, Samuel was a chorister and organ pupil at St Edmundsbury Cathedral under James Thomas. He read music at Royal Holloway College, London, where, as Organ Scholar, he assisted in the accompaniment and direction of the chapel choir for daily services, live broadcasts in the UK and France, and recordings for Signum and Naxos.
Samuel recently graduated from choral conducting, organ and vocal studies at the Royal Academy of Music, gaining an MA and the Alan Kirby prize. Whilst at the Academy, Samuel participated in masterclasses with a number of leading church musicians, including Patrick Russill, Paul Brough and David Hill.
Described as a 'sympathetic and accomplished organist', Samuel is in increasing demand as an organ soloist. He has performed at York Minster, St John's, Smith Square, Chichester Cathedral and St John's College, Cambridge. He has also participated in the Annual Festival of New Organ Music and the Jean Langlais Festival in Brittany. Samuel won the Turpin, Durrant and Dixon prizes at the Fellowship of the Royal College of Organists examination, and currently studies with Matthew Martin.
