Alleluia, alleluia. My soul magnifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour.
after Luke 1: 46–47
Join us in our celebration of prayer and praise, sung by the Choir of The Queen’s College, Oxford.
The Feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary celebrates the young woman chosen by God to be the mother of Jesus Christ. It is one of the major festivals of the Church year, and for two thousand years veneration of the theotokos (God-bearer) has inspired Christian theologians, writers, artists, and musicians.
Mary’s great hymn of praise to God, known as Magnificat, which she sang whilst pregnant, is now sung daily at Evensong. Many composers have set this great text. The setting at this service will be Jackson in G, and the anthem will be Poulenc’s setting of the mediaeval antiphon Salve Regina.
All are welcome to attend. No tickets required.
