Henry III: Piety and Patronage

Tour for KS5 students

Find out what inspired Henry III to spend one tenth of the nation’s wealth on the building of Westminster Abbey. Students will discover Henry’s devotion to Saint Edward the Confessor and find out what it meant to be a medieval patron of the arts. They will also visit the Chapter House, scene of Simon de Montfort’s first parliament.

Enquiring into Elizabeth

Tour for KS4 and KS5 students

Discover how Westminster Abbey reflects the Elizabethan Religious Settlement, and visit the site of the Disputation which brought about the compromise that still characterises the Church of England.

This session can also be booked as part of a joint offer with The National Archives at Kew. Students spend half the day examining original documents and other treasures from their collections, in a hands-on workshop. At the Abbey, they have a guided tour using the building as a historical source to complete their enquiry.

Henry VII: Building a Legacy

Tour for KS4 and KS5 students

Find out how Henry VII established and consolidated his dynasty with this in-depth look at his plans for the Lady Chapel and the Shrine of Edward the Confessor. Tour includes rare access to his tomb.

The Pre-Reformation Church, 1529

Tour for KS4 and KS5 students

Examine the state of the church in 1529 to set the scene for the Reformation. Themes such as church fabric and wealth, religious doctrine and practice, criticisms of the monasteries and popular Catholicism are explored within the context of Westminster Abbey, a Benedictine monastery until 1540.
