Thomas Bushell

Colonel Thomas Bushell was buried on 24th April 1674 in the Little Cloister at Westminster Abbey "near Dr Patrick's house". The Little Cloister is the area where the clergy have their residences. He has no gravestone or monument and it is not clear why the burial took place in this area.

He was born at Cleeve Prior in Worcestershire and entered the service of Sir Francis Bacon. His engineering career was not very successful but he constructed a series of water works at Enstone in Oxfordshire where he lived. His posts included Farmer of the Royal Mines, gentleman of the Privy Chamber to Charles II, Governor of Lundy Island and he had various mining enterprises in Wales, being warden of a local mint. By his first wife Isabell he had sons Francis and Arthur. His second wife was Anne, widow of Sir William Wade, Lieutenant of the Tower of London. He died at his house in Scotland Yard, London.
